Hello there! This is Andy again, and today, I will be talking about tennis tips and tricks!
If you want to win more matches, play better, beat better opponents, or if you’re just a beginner this page is for you!
The Basics of Tennis
- Tennis is a game with many rules, and I will explain the rules here!
- The first and most basic rule is that if you hit the ball to the net, you will lose a point.
- Secondly if the ball hits the net, but still bounces off the net onto the other side of the court, it is still in play.
- Third, if the ball goes out of the court, the point will go to the opponent. If the ball lands inside the white line it is still in, but if it lands outside the white line it is out. The in-and-out rules are very complicated and are hard to comprehend at first, but as you progress further into playing tennis, the rules will feel more simple.
- Fourth, when serving, you must land the ball on the other side of the court, inside the square box diagonal to your serving position. The serving position is behind the line at the end of the court; there are 2 sides to where you must stand, the right or left side, depending on the score. If your foot touches the line at the end of the court before you hit your serve, it will be a foot fault and the point will be given to your opponent.
- Last, If any part of your body including your tennis racket touches the net, that’s a foul; the point will be given to your opponent.
Tennis shots and tricks and their purpose
In tennis, there are so many shots in the tennis arsenal; the most commonly used are the forehand and backhand. These two shots help you to get the ball over the net and help you rally with your opponent. If you hit a forehand or backhand that your opponent can’t reach, it is called a winner.
There are other types of winners you can hit, for example, if you hit the ball at a precise angle underneath the ball, you can create backspin and hit in near the net, which can be used as a short drop. Short drops can be used to confuse your opponent, it is also very difficult for the opponent to reach a short ball with backspin.
If your opponent does a dropshot on you, and you somehow reach it, it’s better for you to stay in front of the net rather than run back to the baseline. Once you are in front of the net, you can do a volley. A volley is a shot where you don’t let the ball bounce, you basically hit the ball in mid-air! This volley shot gives very little time for your opponent to react because this shot is hit before the ball bounces.
Let’s say that you are at the net doing volleys; you must be careful about the moonball. A moonball is a shot with a lot of topspin meaning the ball will jump forward, this shot also goes high, very high, in front of the net, it's almost impossible to hit this shot because it is so high.
During a match, if you’re in a defensive position, meaning you can’t hit strong power shots yet, you can hit a slice. A slice can neutralize a point and get you back in an attacking position. A slice is pretty much the same as a dropshot but hit at a slightly different angle, giving the ball backspin but making the ball jump forward at the same time.
If you have any extra trickshots that you would like to point out, please do!
Tennis Tips
If you want to improve your tennis skills, you should find the right coach, a coach with proper technique and a coach that can teach well. You also have to train at least 2 hours a day or more; I train 3-4 hours a day. Training isn’t just on the court, you must be very dedicated and love this sport very much in order to do these things. For example, instead of playing video games, you can watch tennis matches or videos on how to improve your skills. Once you have a question about the skill you learned on youtube, ask your coach.
Beginner Tips
If you are a beginner, these tips are for you!
- When I was a beginner, I worried a lot about hitting out, hitting to the net, and making mistakes.
- Do not worry if you hit out, because once you hit out, just hit a little softer, maybe change your grip a little.
- Don’t worry if you hit the ball to the net, just hit higher, it’s okay to make mistakes, but it is not okay to not learn from mistakes.
- If you are not sure about grip positions, don’t worry, because everyone has their own grip positions.
- Grip positions come naturally and you can just find one that suits your style. If you ask me,
- I would recommend the 3 or 4 grip on the side, if you do not understand, you can ask your coach or maybe google it up
- While playing against your opponent, try to read what the opponent is going to do next.
- If you can, that’s really good. If you can’t, it’s fine. It is quite hard to read the opponents and their weaknesses, but it will be great once you get the hang of it!
Intermediate Tips
Hello, intermediate players! Here are some tips for you!
- During a match, if you hit a shot to the corner that your opponent can barely reach, and they hit a short ball back, try hitting at the same spot as your last shot. The reason for this is becausonce you hit the corner, your opponent is probably running to the other corner thinking that you will hit there.
- If you are an intermediate player going to tournaments that are not yet professional, the chair umpires or
- referees during those tournaments might not be the best or they might just be bad. Which is why when you are hitting to the corners, try not to hit near the line, otherwise the referee might call it out. This is something I went through as a tournament player; sometimes the referee makes bad calls!
- During matches, you might feel stressed like me. Here are some ways to conquer the stress!
- Stress and anxiety is so common, and you can never really get rid of it, especially at real tournaments with people watching and clapping and cheering. But there are definitely ways to dampen the stress.
- The first way, and the most simple way is that after points or before serve, tinker a bit with your racketor do something that can make you feel a little relieved.
This stip is imporant:
- Focus on your opponent and strategize. Don’t focus on the crowd or what happens, just stay in the game, if you lose a little bit of focus, it can cost the match. If you focus on what other people think about you rather than focus on your game, you won’t be able to win. Try to relax and think about different game plans to beat your opponent.

Advanced Tips
Here are some tips for players that are advanced!
During matches, you might be outsmarted or outplayed by your opponent, because their focus is stronger than yours. If this happens, try confusing them, throwing them off their track or make them lose focus.
- You can do this by hitting dropshots, backspins, or even changing your spin on shots, making some shots have more topspin and some shots have less spin.
- During matches you may feel like you're going to lose, don’t think like that. Tennis is a game of mental toughness and it is also like a game of chess. If you try your best and tell yourself, “I can win!” You will win. Even when you almost lose the match, try a different strategy, maybe add spin to your shot and let the ball go one meter above the net so your opponent has a hard time catching it. Use your brain.
Fitness and Conditioning Tips
- Personally, I am not so good at fitness or strength myself. But I have gotten injured many times becauseof how skinny I am. I advise that you get a strength training coach to improve your physique, if you don’twant to get injured like me. You also have to eat, eat, eat!
- A doctor once told me that I need to eat a lot of carbs and calories, which means beef, bread, pasta, burgers, and a lot more high calorie foods. This results in me growing tall and big.
Tips on Tennis Etiquette
- Good sportsmanship is very very VERY important, one of the main reasons Roger Federer is the best in tennis is because of his sportsmanship and respect for the audience, chair umpire and opponent.
- Also, if you have good sportsmanship sponsorships and businesses will target you and pay a lot of moneyfor you to pose for a photo, or wear their clothes on court, you get so much stuff, free rackets, free shoes, free tennis bags, and so much more!
- During matches, if you smash a racket or disrespect opponents or chair umpires, your market value will go down. Which means no sponsors, and most importantly, other people won’t respect you.
It is so important to respect your audience, your opponent and everyone around you Nick Kyrgrios is a tennis player who disrespects other opponents, the referee, and the audience as well. This is very wrong, it is always important to have good sportsmanship.
Tennis Trips
If you like to go on trips and play tennis, the best places to go, if you like warm places, are Florida. Florida is called tennis paradise because of the respect for the sport there, including the number of people who play tennis. In Florida, there is an academy called the IMG academy, founded by Nick Bollettieri. This academy is famous for producing some of the most famous and loved tennis players, such as Serena Williams and Andre Agassi.
Another great location to go is Spain, because Spain has produced many of today’s most famous players such as Rafeal Nadal, or Carlos Alcaraz and much more. Spain also has warm weather which is perfect for tennis players to go. This country is also very beautiful and a great place for a vacation as well.
Local Tennis Locations
One of the best places to train tennis in my opinion is where I train in Thailand, Bangkok.
This tennis academy is called Simorgh Tennis academy and is owned by an Iranian coach who I train with everyday. In this academy, there are also many hitting partners for recreational players who just play for fun. This academy also has many good coaches who can teach and are great for learning tennis.
International Tennis Locations
In the tennis world, there are only four major tournaments that are the most important, give the most prizemoney, and if you win just one of these tournaments, you can get to the number 1 ranking!
The most important tournament out of these four tournaments is Wimbledon!
The reason for this is that this tournament has the richest history and is the first major tournament. Wimbledon is held in England and the rules are that you must wear all white clothes and shoes. At Wimbledon, you are expected to stay silent, and the players are more formal. The other majors are also very exciting and electric! Especially the US open Championship, this major is held in New York where the people are very wild. During play, you might hear people shout which disturbs the players. I would say that the US open is the opposite from Wimbledon.
The Australian Open held in Melbourne is the only major I have ever been to.I think that this place is so good for a vacation, and it’s the best place to go for a major in my opinion. The views are great in Australia and the people are extremely nice! This major slam is also one of the most iconic ones because Australia has produced some of the best tennis players there are!
The last major is held in France, Paris, and is called the Roland Garros. The court here is made of clay and the atmosphere has a feeling that makes you think of the rich history of this tournament. This court is best for players from Spain like Rafael Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz because all courts are made of clay in Spain as well.
All of the majors in the world are the best for long distance trips and are exciting as well! Of course, there are a lot of things to expect from these tournaments too! Such as, some of your favorite players may not be playing that tournament because of an injury or something else. Also, your favorite player may not win this tournament. Things can be extremely expensive as well, so look out for this!
Another thing that I did not anticipate was that the crowd would be so huge, like really, really big. It was so easy to get lost or even get pushed and more, this is something everyone should expect from a major tournament like these four.
Conclusion
So, with everything said, I have some main points to cover.
First of all, I talked about the In-Out rules of tennis, and most of the other rules too.
These rules are important for tennis matches and games.
In tennis, there are many shots, and there are many purposes for the shots. Like topspin lob or dropshot, these shots must be used at the correct time and place, not used randomly. As said before, you need to use your brain to play.
I would like to reinforce one of the tennis tips sections. It is so important to find the right coach for yourself, you might not improve at all if your coach is the wrong one. Moreover, it is necessary to try to learn by yourself during your free time, not just on the court but also off the court.
As I said before in the beginners section, it is also very important to know that it is okay to make mistakes during your learning progress, because mistakes help you learn!
Again, in the intermediate and advanced players section, I would like to say that during matches or training, if you do not think, it’s impossible to win or get better at all.
In the tennis etiquette section I would like to conclude it is very, so, and extremely important to have sportsmanship, without respect for other people, you can never ever improve. I do not know how else to say this but this skill is so important for any career, not just tennis, for other sports too! Furthermore, the ability to respect others can significantly help you with your life, respect can let other people be more open to you, treat you better and so much more!
Last thing I would like to talk about the best trips and the best tournaments to visit, such as Wimbledon, US open, Australian open, and the Roland Garros. There are things to expect like crowded places, expensive things and unexpected losses.
That is my conclusion that sums up all the information on this article!
